Review: Return

Author: Aaron Becker

This past weekend Julia and I had the opportunity to attend a storytime reading by Aaron Becker at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA, celebrating the publication of his new book Return. Return is the final volume of the trilogy that began with Journey and was followed by Quest. As many of you will be aware, these are wordless picture books. You might wonder: how good is a book meant to be read to children if it is wordless?  Does this type of story keep children engaged?

If the children in the audience that day are any indication, the answer is certainly a resounding yes. Children are excellent picture readers. And the wonderful part about Aaron’s pictures is that they are so detailed. I loved how the children were so willing to fill in the specifics. It was enjoyable not only for the kids, but for the adult listeners. The kids were so inventive!

As part of the presentation, we received a copy of The Journal Trilogy Activity Kit. It contains some fun activities for kids, but the best part is certain the article “Your Guide to Reading a Wordless Picture Book.” Check out and look under resources for the kit.

For those interested in Aaron Becker’s illustrations, check out the hope & feathers gallery, also in Amherst, MA, from September 1 – October 1. I loved the illustrations in the books, but having seen the prints at the book signing, I feel sure this exhibit will be well worth the trip.

We’ve seen Becker present on his work before at last year’s Connecticut Children’s Book Fair. Check out our review of that experience HERE!
