Running with Wolves: Our Story of Life with the Sawtooth Pack

Authors: Jim & Jamie Dutcher

Publisher: National Geographic, 2019

Ages: 6-14

Affection. Playfulness. Cooperation. Family ties. Are these the words that come to mind when you think of wolves?

Authors and filmmakers Jim and Jamie Dutcher have done much to change our outlook on wolves. Wolves are far more than the savage predators we believe them to be. Yes, they are predators. They are what is known as a keynote species, which means an entire habitat depends on them to keep the proper balance. But having been hunted nearly to extinction, we knew very little about their interactions.

Readers learn how the Dutchers brought together a group of wolves to become the Sawtooth pack (so named for the Sawtooth Mountains). Their story will educate – and fascinate – readers. Wolves are complex!

This book is also surprisingly emotional. Sometimes the best word to describe the emotions felt during the reading would be “raw.” Sometimes it is funny. Often it is exciting and more than a bit scary. It is also poignant, even though it is a story of hope.

Although this book is about wolves – the Sawtooth pack, in particular – the experiences of Jim and Jamie Dutcher with other animals are included. These are not just random anecdotes; these other animal relationships help build the story of the wolves. Yet these experiences are also powerful as well as entertaining.

This nonfiction book is mainly text, but there are photos worth checking out. There is a color insert at the center of the book which gives a picture of each member of the pack. At the beginning of each chapter, there is a black-and-white photo. Be sure to look at the photo in the final chapter. It’s so moving!

Running with Wolves is a book that challenges our preconceptions about wolves. It will pique curiosity and encourage respect for the natural world. It is a truly inspirational book.
